I founded Stemming to create an online space for women in the typically male-dominated STEM fields (science, math, engineering, and technology) to meet and connect. Stemming users read, comment on, and contribute to the collaborative blog — introducing themselves, posing questions from their academic or work lives, or sharing links or opportunities relevant to the women on the site.

Ruby on Rails Programming

I programmed Stemming's entire database-driven backend using Ruby on Rails, MySQL, and a variety of Rails gems and plugins. Some features include:

• User accounts, logins, and profiles
• User friendships and social networking features
• Private messaging between users
• A collaborative blog which any user can contribute to
• A front page featuring selected posts fron the blog promoted by the administrator
• User and post tagging for easy browsing and search
• Filters and search, which enable people browsing the site to find posts and users by interest
• A user recommendation feature that suggests other users who have similar interests to and/or live near a particular user
• A "most active users" algorithm that displays users who use the site frequently on the homepage
